Creatures In The Dark is a light installation for visitors, and
residents to engage in the space at night. Inspired by the Chinese
proverb “飯後百步走,活到九十九” which translates to “if you take
100 steps after each meal, you’ll live to 99”. The piece aims to
motivate more leisure exercises in the evening, and moreover engage with our natural environment through the act of strolling.
The work fixates on a relationship between death and perservation. The installation reimagines a memorial in which the Long-nose Bandicoot, Swift Parrot and Grey-headed Flying Fox are extinct. Analysing culture’s obsession with creating mascots in preservation of animals, the animals are reinterpreted as if they were remade in a museum. To accomodate the audience which are mainly families and the elderly, the added component of augumented reality, opens conversation to provide education on endangered species for children.

Three columns uphold the 3 species, the centre column holds an egg. The egg is a concoction of the 3 specie’s silhouettes, a clinical trial to revive the animals, adorned by spawnlings scattered around.
